Little Free Library

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

I came across this brilliant idea by accident and I absolutely in love with it! The Little Free Library is a network of people putting up tiny little libaries where people can come by and take a book or leave a book! What a way to promote literacy and a love for reading! You can build your own or buy a kit or one already made from them directly! How cool is that?

According to their website, their goals are:

  • To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.
  • To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.
  • To build more than 2,510 libraries around the world–more than Andrew Carnegie!

And so, from their brilliant minds to yours…click here to go to their website and learn more.

How to share Nook Books within the same house

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

If you all share the same B&N account you just download as you normally would into all the Nooks.

If you have more than one Nook in the same household AND you have separate Barnes and Noble accounts, you can still share Nook books for free. Here is how…

  1. Copy your B&N e-books from each of your Nooks to your computer into folders (make a new folder for each account).
  2. Copy from the folder you made in step 1 into the ‘my documents’ on whichever Nook you want.
  3. The first time you read a book on the new Nook it will ask you for the name and credit card number used to buy that book — enter it and you should never have to do this again for this or any other e-book you transfer.

This should work for e-books purchased at Barnes and Noble, Fictionwise and eReader.com as well.

You can and will want to share Adobe Digital Editions. They allow you to have up to 6 computers and 6 devices on each account. Take advantage of this because it keeps things simple with regards to sharing. If you have Sony Reader e-books, you should use the exact e-mail you used for the Adobe account. If you already signed up under a different e-mail, you can go into your settings and change it.

Read books for charity

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Ohhhhh! Two of my favorite things… reading and doing something positive… have now been combined.

We Give Books was created by the Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation.1

Easy-peasy. You go to their website http://www.wegivebooks.org/ and you choose from one of the campaigns, sign up, read the FREE books online to yourself, to others, to anyone who will listen. Read them once, read them twice, read them a dozen times over. Each time you read a book, a book is donated to the campaign you chose. So simple, so thoughtful, so fun.

SO! What are your waiting for? Go read a couple books tonight… they are not difficult reads. A few of my favorites were School Days Around the World by Catherine E. Chambers, Ladybug Girl by Jacky Davis and David Soman, and Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. The first is a compilation of stories depicting a typical day at school for 7 different children in 7 different countries. It was interesting to read how similar school is for children around the world and how it is different. The second was about a little girl who is all dressed up like a ladybug and is left to her own devices for entertainment… which she achieves with style. The last is a familiar story to many in a series of Llama Llama books. It is cute particularly when read out loud with animation. I read this one to everyone right before they went to bed…

I read each and every book offered so far at least once. And I even read aloud to teenagers and my dearest friend! =) Hahahaha… but they enjoyed it. I intend to read them again and again and read all the new ones (until they make me stop!) I think this is a great cause and want to be part of it! =) Join the fun… you know you want to!

Free e-books from Barnes and Noble

Monday, July 19th, 2010

There are new free e-books from Barnes and Noble this week. You can check them out here. There are about 100 free e-books offered at Barnes and Noble dot com at any given time. This is good. Can’t beat free! =) They also have over 50,000 e-books for under $5 (click here)! Inexpensive, easy-to-get reads. I am not afraid of spending money on my reading materials but if you are trying to save money or have to live within your means and your means do not include books then you can definitely find something worth reading or re-reading at BN.com either real books or e-books. You can also get free e-books for the Kindle here. It seems there are no shortages of free e-books. If only they had such offers for printed books…

Check out books at the library on your Nook

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

You can check out e-books from your local library on your Nook. Here is an easy how-to guide to read e-books free on your Nook.

How to get e-books on your Nook (that you check out from the library):

1. Download the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software.

2. Sign up for an Adobe account (Use the same email address you use for your Nook to ensure authentification doesn’t become a problem).

3. Go to OverDrive.com and put your zip code in to find which local libraries have e-books to check out.

4. If you have a library card move on to the next step. If you do not already a library card at the library/libraries listed in your area you will need to sign up for one.

5. Visit your library’s website (listed on OverDrive), choose the books you want to check out and download them to a place you will remember (i.e. make a folder named ‘E-Library’ on your desktop and save them there).

6. Open Adobe Digital Editions.

7. Drag and drop your borrowed books from the folder where you saved them to Adobe Digital Editions.

8. Turn your Nook on and plug it into your computer.

9. Authorize your Nook in Adobe Digital Editions (I think you only have to do this once).

10. Click on ‘All Items” (in ADE) and drag the books from the right pane to your Nook ( listed in the left pane of ADE) and then wait for them to transfer. (This step is all in the ADE program NOT on your Nook).

11. Unplug your Nook and go to “My Library” and then choose “View My Documents”.

You should see your borrowed books here and then you can read them! =) Free books for Nook owners! YAY! Hip! Hip! Hooray for free e-books!

Here are some other helpful links for sharing, borrowing or lending e-books with the Nook:

Free e-books – modern:1

Free e-books – classic (pre-1923, copyright expired):

The Google Books classics are also accessible through Barnes & Noble. Google Books is very definitely quantity over quality. There’s too much to browse; you need to search. And what you do find will probably have some reproduction problems. Try Feedbooks first and Google Books last.2
